"WRITE FIELD" WINNERS
The Amazing Adventure of the Boston Red Sox
By Christopher Berube, Age 12, Grades 4-6 Division
nce upon a time, about a year ago, the Red Sox were travelling to
Hawaii to play the Hawaiian baseball team. They were travelling by plane. They had all their equipment and stuff with them. Suddenly, the pilot yelled that the plane was going to crash due to low fuel. Everyone got their safety vests on right away and prayed that
everything would be OK. Suddenly, the plane hit the ground, but landed safely. They were on an island in the middle of the ocean and far from Hawaii. They all got out of the plane safely and sat on the beach thinking of what they should do. Suddenly, Nomar Garciaparra said that they should create a plan on how to survive. Nomar said, that some people should hunt and fish for food after making tools for doing so, that some people should search for fresh water to drink, some people could build a shelter and the rest of the people could build a
baseball diamond so they could play. Everyone agreed with Nomar's plan, so they built a campfire on the beach and took turns sleeping so that they got a good
night's sleep for the next day. When everyone got up, they quickly got to work. The first group went out to hunt for food. They made their fishing poles and spears, and then set off to hunt. They
were very nervous because they didn't know what to expect in he forest,
but they worked
hard and were successful catching 2 wild pigs and 22 big fish. The
second group went out
to find supplies to build a shelter. They built axes and went out to
find wood and started
building the shelter. The third group set off to look for water. The
last group started
building the baseball diamond. They had somehow created some tools out
of large stones
to cut out the field. So after a long day of work, everybody went back
and ate dinner, and
drank plenty of water. After dinner everyone went to sleep. When
everyone woke up
they started their jobs again. The hunting group set out to hunt and
was successful
catching 5 wild pigs and 6 large fish. After all their catches they
would cook them in the
campfire. The group who was working on the shelter started now and
built a rather large
shelter. It was about 15 feet tall and 50 feet wide. It took them 4
days to build it. The
water group gathered a very large amount of water. The group building
the baseball
diamond did a great job, they made the infield dirt and everything and
then they went and
gathered the baseball supplies from the plane and brought them back to
the field.
Everybody was finished with their jobs. They all went back to the
campground, they made
and ate their supper and then went to sleep. After everyone woke up
they had a baseball
game (9 on 9). They brought lots of water for the games and even found
lemons to make
lemonade. In the first game there was extra innings and Nomar
Garciaparra hit a home
run to win the game. There were captains for each team. They were
Nomar Garciaparra
and Jose Offerman. Everybody always looked forward to the games. After
every game,
everyone would go out hunting for food. Day after day Troy O'Leary,
Nomar
Garciaparra, John Valentin, Mike Stanley and Brian Daubach continued to
crush home
runs. Day after day there were always close games. On special days
they would have a
big game and have a feast. The Red Sox ball club was on this island for
28 days. On July
4, 1998, Nomar Garciaparra was about to do something amazing. It was
the bottom of
the 9th, 2 outs, bases loaded, full count, his team down by 3. Here's
the instant replay.
The 3-2 pitch. Nomar swings and crushes it to deep left-center, and
oh-wait, there's a
plane, and it hit the plane! Nomar Garciaparra hits a grand slam off a
plane to win the
game. Jose Offerman says, look, I think the plane is coming down to
rescue us. The plan
did come down and rescue them. They ended up going straight to Hawaii
to play the
baseball game.
The End
P.S. The score of the Hawaiian baseball game was 17 - 1 - Boston!
