"WRITE FIELD" WINNERS

On Top of it All

By Matt Hesketh, Age 12, Grades 4-6 Division Westwood, 07/09/99

sit above a famous person. He is 6 feet tall and he weighs 180 pounds. When he is at work, he takes me for a shake while he is tapping his toes and tightening his gloves. He takes a big cut at a fast-moving object while I am watching. As he slides and dives to reach his target, I get quite dirty. He is very successful in reaching his goal because he is quick.

I also have a challenging job helping my friend. I have to keep the sun out of his eyes while he works. I love being with him at work because everybody cheers him on. When he hears the cheers, he likes to give me a little tug.

He takes me everywhere with him. I even have my own closet in his house. He keeps me with him while he works out and runs.

One time, when we went to Abercrombie & Fitch to get some clothes, I got lost. It all happened when we went into the store. He was trying a shirt on when I fell. I was kicked away by a young girl. Someone finally picked me up and brought me home. The man never tried to find out who I belonged to. I sat on his counter for three days. I only had one identifying symbol on me. When he looked closer at me and saw my friend's first name, he know right away who I belonged to and was able to bring me back home.

Another time I got lost was when I was in a hotel in Oakland. My friend was working there and he brought me with him. He forgot me in the hotel room when he left for work. When the cleaning lady came in, she threw me in the laundry bucket and went on her way. When the bucket was full, she put everything in the washer. I nearly died. I went around and around for almost an hour. When the wash was done, she noticed me and put me in the lost and found. When my friend returned and found me, I was OK but a little dizzy.

As you can see, I do not have an easy life. I get lost, kicked, thrown, and just about anything else you can think of. However, my life is full of action and adventure. Although it is hard sometimes, it is a great life. I am very proud to be Nomar Garciaparra's baseball hat. Nomar is a wonderful role model for people of all ages. He is a great guy with a great personality. He is funny, nice, and is very respectful. He is also a very talented athlete and is proud to be on a championship team this year. I am lucky to be On Top of it All.
