Black players appeared in the All-Star game for the first time -- Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella and Don Newcombe of the host Dodgers for the NL, and Cleveland's Larry Doby for the AL. Newcombe was the losing pitcher -- but was almost a hero, hitting a long drive to left that the wind held up, and Ted Williams caught. The NL made five errors, meanwhile, and the AL won, 11-7.
