1970:
NL 5, AL 4 (12 innings)
The voting for all starters but the pitcher was restored to the fans, through a computerized ballot distributed at major and minor-league ballparks. This system's major flaw is having a limit on the number of players listed on the ballot, so rookies or surprises need write-in votes to become starters. The Braves' Rico Carty was a write-in starter in 1970, but only one other player -- the Dodgers' Steve Garvey -- has won a position that way. Carl Yastrzemski of the Red Sox had four hits and was named MVP. The American League led 4-1 going into the bottom of the ninth. And the Nationals still won, 5-4 in the 12th, on successive two-out singles by Pete Rose, Bill Grabarkewitz and Jim Hickman. The game is most remembered for Rose's bowling over Cleveland catcher Ray Fosse to score the winning run. Fosse was 23 and considered the game's best young catcher until the collision, after which he was never the same player.
