All-Star Future teams present and accounted for

By Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff, 06/22/99

Greenfield native Peter Bergeron, an outfielder for the Montreal Expos, was named to the United States roster for the Futures game to be played July 11 at Fenway Park during All-Star weekend.

The team was announced yesterday by Baseball America and Major League Baseball, which took input from all 30 general managers to compile the US squad and the international team it will oppose.

Thirteen countries will be represented on the World team, which includes Red Sox farmhands Sun Woo Kim of Korea and Tomokazu Ohka of Japan, both pitchers.

The Red Sox also will have representation on the World coaching staff in DeMarlo Hale, manager of Trenton, and Rich Bombard, pitching coach for Pawtucket.

The US team will be led by Rick Ankiel of the St. Louis Cardinals, considered the top pitching prospect in baseball, and Astros outfielder Lance Berkman, MVP of the Triple A World Series.

The Dominican Republic has eight players on the World team, including infielders Pablo Ozuna of the Florida Marlins, Aramis Ramirez of the Pittsburgh Pirates, and Alfonso Soriano of the New York Yankees.

Also on the World team pitching staff is Tony Armas Jr. of the Expos and Venezuela, a former Boston property.
