Evans to umpire at plate in All-Star game

Associated Press, 06/29/99

NEW YORK - Jim Evans will be the home plate umpire for next month's All-Star game, the commissioner's office said Tuesday.

Evans, a 28-year American League veteran, also worked the All-Star game in 1976 and 1989.

He will be joined by AL umpires Dale Ford (second base) and Mark Johnson (left field). NL umpires working the game are Terry Tata (first base), Angel Hernandez (third base) and Larry Vanover (right field).

Tata umpired the All-Star game in 1978 and 1988, Ford in 1988 and Johnson in 1990. Hernandez and Vanover will be making their first All-Star appearances.

Official scorers for the July 13 game at Boston's Fenway Park will be Bob Elliott of The Toronto Sun, who is the president of the Baseball Writers' Association of America; Dave O'Hara, a retired sports writer for The Associated Press; and Charlie Scoggins of The (Lowell) Sun, a BBWAA vice president.
