Shelley (yes, her real name) says she taps into people's subconscious by having them pick seashells from her 400-plus collection. $50 for an hourlong reading at her home. She also travels to psychic fairs, but for those she uses photos instead of the actual shells.

Courses

Ayer Institute, 16 Monmouth, Brookline 617-566-7639, www.fst.org. Teaching body of The First Spiritual Temple, a nondenominational Christian Spiritualist church, not part of modern Spirtualist movement. Teaches mediumship, healing, psychic awareness.

Modern Spiritualist churches believe in reincarnation, spiritual healing, and that spirits join services. Members are not necessarily Christian.

Many adult education programs including those at Boston Center for Adult Education (617-267-4430) and Cambridge Center for Adult Education (617-547-6789) feature courses in psychic development.
