Fashion Moment

Singin' in the sun

By Ann Cortissoz

Parasols, those dainty, frilly little umbrellas twirled by women with alabaster skin, were always effective protection from the sun, but they seemed so 19th century. This summer, however, modern, streamlined versions of the parasol popped up (yes, there were some sunny days) as a fashion accessory and as extra protection for sensitive skin.

This sleek parasol, from the Boston company Para el Sol, is stylish and sturdy. The handles are handcrafted maple, the tips are Italian brass, and the fabric is a sun-protective weave rated SPF 30, says the manufacturer. It's the perfect accouterment on that winter beach vacation, when skin is especially vulnerable.

Parasols from Para el Sol, which cost $125, are available in a white-on-white pattern, teal and lilac, and white with a lilac butterfly pattern. Call 888-723-6543 to order.
