Zakharova ran a personal best of 2:21:31 in Chicago last year. She was ranked the No. 4 marathoner in the world by Track & Field magazine and is the Russian national recordholder.

1:05 p.m.: The women's wheelchair racers are approaching the Newton hills with Edith Hunkeler still in the lead. Among female runners, Margaret Okayo of Kenya and Svetlana Zakharova of Russia are running side by side at Mile 12; Marla Runyan and Lyubov Denisova have dropped back slightly.

1 p.m.: Four elite female runners are bunched at the head of the pack, with Marla Runyan of Oregon slightly ahead of Lyubov Denisova of Russia, Svetlana Zakharova of Russia, and Margaret Okayo of Kenya. Vincent Kipsos has opened up another lead of several yards in the men's race as they draw closer to Mile 12 at Wellesley College. The men are on a 2:11 pace.
