Hunkeler returns to Boston, where she placed sixth in 1997 (2:04:28).
She has enjoyed considerable success at the Berlin Marathon over the past two years. She won the event in 1998 in a personal best time of 1:47:53, which also stands as the fifth fastest in that race's history. In 1997, she was barely edged by race champion Louis Sauvage as the duo recorded an identical time of 1:49:58.
She placed fourth at the Gasparilla (Florida) Distance Classic 15K (41:02) and fifth at the Sempach International Marathon (Switzerland) in 1998.
Hunkeler also competed on the track at the international level and placed sixth in the 800 meters at the 1997 World Athletics Championships in Athens, Greece.
