Carlton L. Howorth III
NORTON
Rescues were nothing new to Carlton L. ''Bud'' Howorth III, known as ''Buddy'' to his close friends and family. An information technology support specialist for CIBER Inc. in Woburn, Howorth provided computer support to students and professors at Harvard University.
"If someone's computer crashed, he had to save the day," said Chris Hickey, a sales executive for CIBER.
It came as no surprise to Hickey, or Howorth's family, that at The Station, Howorth saved the day one last time. He freed his girlfriend, Donna Reis of Scituate, R.I., from the crush of people, his father said, and allowed her to crawl to safety.
"That was the way he was," said Howorth's father, Carlton L. "Bud" Howorth Jr. "He was always thinking of other people."
The 39-year-old Cohasset native eased the stresses of work by spending time with his 3 1/2-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, from his former marriage, and working on the fixer-upper home he had purchased in Norton. Adept as a handyman, Howorth saved cars, homes, and -- as it turned out -- lives.
"He was a troubleshooter, and he loved it," said his father.
