Drug use

In a voter poll conducted earlier this year for Fox News, 69 percent of those surveyed wanted to know about a presidential candidate's past cocaine use and 41 percent said they cared if the candidate had used marijuana. Here is what the major presidential candidates have said about their past drug use.

Bill Bradley
  Bill Bradley (Democrat)

Al Gore
  Al Gore (Democrat)
Admits he used marijuana as a young adult. He said of the experience, "It was looked at similar to the way moonshine was looked at during Prohibition."

Gary Bauer
  Gary Bauer (Republican)

George W. Bush
  George W. Bush (Republican)
Has been hounded by reports of cocaine use during his youth. A recent Bush biography by author J.H. Hatfield includes an uncorroborated account of a 1972 drug arrest, an allegation Bush has denied. However, Bush will not flatly state that he never used illegal drugs. He has deflected such questions on grounds of privacy and has said he was once "young and irresponsible." However, he has stated that he could have passed the FBI background checks his father imposed on employees during his administration, which required employees to be drug-free since 1974.

Steve Forbes
  Steve Forbes (Republican)
Denies ever having used illegal drugs.

Orrin Hatch
  Orrin Hatch (Republican)

Alan Keyes
  Alan Keyes (Republican)

John McCain

  Pat Buchanan (Reform Party)
