Gun control

The United States had 32,436 firearm deaths in 1997. Homicides are the second leading cause of gun deaths, behind suicide. Handgun murders fell to a 9-year low of 9,796 in 1997. Here are the positions of the major presidential candidates on gun control.

Bill Bradley
  Bill Bradley (Democrat)
Supports gun registration and licensing for handgun buyers following completetion of a mandatory safety course. Calls for a ban on the small, cheap handguns known as "Saturday Night Specials." Wants to require trigger locks and extend background checks to buyers at gun shows. Has also proposed limiting handgun purchases to one per person per month. Would raise license fees on dealers to reduce their number.

Al Gore
  Al Gore (Democrat)
Wants mandatory licenses for handgun buyers. Would require manufacturers and federally licensed sellers to report gun sales to a state authority to help trace guns used to commit crimes. Supports banning "Saturday night specials." Supports the Clinton administration's gun control bill, which would raise the age for handgun ownership from 18 to 21, restrict purchases at gun shows and limit handgun purchases to one per person per month. Cast tie-breaking Senate vote for instant background checks at gun shows, but voted against a waiting period and dealer licensing in the '80s.

Gary Bauer
  Gary Bauer (Republican)
Has vowed to "protect and defend" gun ownership from encroaching regulation. Calls for stronger enforcement of existing gun laws.

George W. Bush
  George W. Bush (Republican)
Wants to enforce existing laws, but would raise the age for handgun purchases to 21 and ban large ammunition clips. Supports instant background checks at gun shows. Opposes universal gun registration. Backed legislation in Texas permitting concealed weapons and protecting gun makers from lawsuits from cities. Also opposed mandatory child safety locks.

Steve Forbes
  Steve Forbes (Republican)
Wants to enforce existing laws. Supports a national instant check system to prevent felons from purchasing guns. Also favors automatic jail time for any criminal who attempts to buy a gun and for anyone using a gun in the commission of a crime.

Orrin Hatch
  Orrin Hatch (Republican)
Wants to enforce existing laws. Would extend background checks to gun shows and expand them to look for a history of mental problems. Sponsored a bill that would toughen gun-show restrictions and impose a lifetime gun ownership ban on juveniles convicted of felonies.

Alan Keyes
  Alan Keyes (Republican)
Has said free citizens have a fundamental duty to keep and bare arms. Said the right to gun ownership is essential so citizens can "resist and overthrow the power responsible" if their rights are being "systematically violated."

John McCain
  John McCain (Republican)
Supports instant checks at gun shows and pawn shops, but opposes waiting periods. Opposed the proposed ban on assault-type weapons.

  Pat Buchanan (Reform Party)
Promises "no compromise" on gun rights. Would deny convicted felons the right to own firearms.
