Big spender wins in N.J.

AST BRUNSWICK, N.J. - After their candidate spent as much as $65 million in the costliest US Senate race in history, supporters of Jon Corzine counted it as money well spent. Corzine, a former Wall Street baron, won a surprisingly narrow victory over US Representative Bob Franks in New Jersey.

''What it demonstrated is that a strong get-out-the-vote effort at the end of the day can make a difference,'' said state Democratic party chairman Tom Giblin. Aides said last night that Corzine was waiting for Franks to make a concession speech before the former cochairman of Goldman Sachs made a victory speech.
