Buchanan blasts `mass immigration'

ORBA LINDA, Calif. - Reform Party presidential contender Patrick J. Buchanan yesterday blamed ''mass immigration'' for a splintering of American culture and pledged to stem the flow if he captures the White House. ''In too many cases, the American melting pot has been reduced to a simmer,'' Buchanan told 350 people at the Richard Nixon Library & Birthplace. ''If we want to assimilate new Americans, and we have no choice if we are going to remain one nation, we must slow down the pace of immigration,'' Nixon's former speechwriter said. (AP)

Bush is endorsed by Ted Williams

MANCHESTER, N.H. - At the annual New Hampshire baseball dinner in Manchester last night, Republican presidential candidate George W. Bush was endorsed by Red Sox legend Ted Williams before addressing hundreds of supporters. Williams said he was proud to endorse Bush, who ''I hope so much [will be ] our next president.'' He said he was ''more impressed every time I hear him speak.'' (Globe Staff)

Wrestler aspires to N.C. governorship

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Ric ''Nature Boy'' Flair says he wants to follow the lead of fellow wrestler Jesse ''The Body'' Ventura, now Minnesota's governor, and run for North Carolina's top office. Flair, 50, said Monday on the ''Live with Regis and Kathie Lee'' TV show that he was interested in the job, possibly as an independent candidate. Flair, whose real name is Richard Morgan Fliehr, has lived in Charlotte since 1974 and has dabbled in Republican politics. He has raised funds or campaigned for Senator Jesse Helms, Representative Sue Myrick, and Senator Lauch Faircloth.
