USTIN, Texas - On a day when he hoped to avoid making any further news, George W. Bush faced questions yesterday about a large bandage on his right cheek.

Aides said it covered an infection, possibly a boil.

''I got a little infection, just an infection,'' Bush told reporters.

His communications director, Karen Hughes, said Bush noticed a red area on his face several days ago and had a doctor look at it.

''We're not certain what caused it. Maybe an ingrown hair,'' she said. ''It's a large bump.''

Hughes said the doctor recommended Bush take antibiotics and use heat compresses to drain the infection.
