Bush Run puts town back in spotlight

Globe Staff, June 13, 1999

KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine -- Marine One thundering overhead. The presidential motorcade snaking down Ocean Avenue. Noisy critics dressed like broccoli spears demonstrating on the Village Green.

The heady days when Kennebunkport played host to a sitting president are becoming a distant memory. Now, former President George Bush can play golf or take his boat onto the ocean without being in the public eye.

But the presidential aspirations of a younger Bush, who visits this weekend, have residents wondering if the quiet resort town on Maine's rocky coast might once again play host to a sitting president.

Residents are generally enthusiastic about Governor George W. Bush of Texas, the Republican presidential front-runner. He will spend today with his parents at Walker's Point before visiting New Hampshire, home of the first presidential primary.
