eorge W. Bush has tapped as his White House chief of staff Andrew Card, a Holbrook native who held a Cabinet post in the administration of Bush's father.

Card, 53, is on leave from his job as director of government affairs for General Motors. He headed Bush's team at the Republican National Convention in July.

A former secretary of transportation, Card also served as a Massachusetts state legislator for four terms. During his tenure, he helped form the Ward Commission, which investigated alleged corruption in the state's building of the University of Massachusetts at Boston campus.

After a failed bid for governor in 1982, Card became the link between Massachusetts officials and the Reagan administration. He then was named transportation secretary under President Bush.

Card hails from a political family: His father, the late Andrew Card Sr., was a member of the Holbrook School Committee and ran for the Legislature in 1966. His brother, Brad, is chief of staff to US Representative John E. Sweeney, Republican of New York.

His sister Alison works for Governor John Rowland of Connecticut and is married to Ron Kaufman, a member of the Republican National Committee from Massachusetts and former political director for President Bush.
