Dole's Spouse mulls assisting McCain

Associated Press, May 18, 1999

Former senator Bob Dole says he is considering giving money to Senator John McCain's presidential campaign, never mind that his wife, Elizabeth Dole, also is seeking the Republican nomination. "McCain's my friend. And he's not raising the money that George Bush is. I think we need to keep good people in the race," Dole said in an interview published yesterday in The New York Times. "So I've thought about ways to help McCain in particular." But before writing a check, the three-time presidential candidate said, "I think I'd check with Elizabeth first." McCain, a senator from Arizona, is an announced candidate for the GOP presidential nomination in 2000. Bush and Mrs. Dole are exploring whether to enter the race.
