McCain gets endorsement of Teddy Roosevelt kin

AN DIEGO - Arizona Senator John McCain came to California to campaign as a ''Reagan Republican'' in an effort to shore up his support among Republicans before the March 7 primaries.

McCain planned to leave for campaigning in Ohio after an evening appearance in San Diego, where he was being endorsed by California Representative Duncan Hunter.

McCain, who also was increasing his TV ads in Virginia, which holds its Republican primary on Tuesday, was rejoining the campaign trail after a day off at his ranch in Arizona.

Earlier in the week, McCain, who said he wants to reach outside his party as Theodore Roosevelt once did, got a boost from a granddaughter of that president.

''He's a crusader and he practices what he preaches and he has the determination to bring this country back to the people,'' Edith Williams, 82, declared after meeting McCain this week aboard Spirit of Seattle as it sailed across Puget Sound.
