ANOVER, N.H. - A new poll suggests Republican presidential candidate John McCain is gaining on George W. Bush in the New Hampshire primary campaign.

Registered Republicans favored the Texas governor 39 percent to 27 percent over McCain, the US senator from Arizona. A similar poll in August had Bush in the lead 45 percent to 10 percent. The other Republican presidential candidates for the Feb. 1 primary are in single digits.

''Obviously, what we are doing is working, which is a few brief remarks and then questions,'' McCain said yesterday in Hanover.

The poll was conducted for the Concord Monitor by polling firm Research 2000 Wednesday and Thursday, after Elizabeth Dole dropped out of the race. The pollsters questioned 602 registered voters by telephone. The poll had a reported margin of error of 4 percentage points.
