N.H. television station allows Bush to explain his no-show

ANOVER, N.H. - Governor George W. Bush of Texas was a no-show for last night's debate, igniting more criticism that he's avoiding the fray. But from faraway Dallas, Bush nonetheless had his say - unchallenged by the five other Republicans seeking the nomination.

That's because the debate cosponsor, WMUR-TV, gave Bush five minutes at the top of its evening newscast to defend his decision to stay in Texas, where his wife was receiving an award from her alma mater. ''I hope the people understand, I love my wife,'' Bush said.

Bush's opponents were none too pleased that he missed the debate, and that he got free TV time. Outside the debate at Dartmouth College, Joseph Bramante of Derry stood with a handmade placard that asked, ''Where's Chicken George?''

Even among some of his supporters, there is concern that Bush has not made enough appearances in the Granite State. His trip to northern New Hampshire next week will be his sixth visit, and he has agreed to a Dec. 2 debate in the state.

But his principal challenger, according to the polls, seemed unperturbed that Bush was not on the stage last night. ''That's just an example of him being the front-runner,'' said Senator John McCain of Arizona.

In the television interview, Bush handled sharp questions about his decision to stay away nonchalantly. ''Yes, this is an important night in New Hampshire. But it's a more important night in Dallas, as far as my family is concerned,'' he said.

When the WMUR-TV reporter noted that Bush's television ads have begun, even in his absence, Bush replied with a smile: ''I hope your station appreciates that.''
