Union distributed 1 million pro-Gore fliers

ALBANY, N.Y. -- In what it billed as the largest such labor demonstration ever in New York, the state AFL-CIO distributed 1 million Al Gore-for-president fliers at worksites throughout the state Monday.

Union members passed out the materials at about 10,000 workplaces, according to President Denis Hughes.

"This statewide political day of action will clearly show that labor will be the definitive force in putting Al Gore over the top in the March 7 New York primary," Hughes said.

Among the sites where the pro-Gore fliers were handed out were manufacturing plants, teacher staff rooms, construction sites, hospitals and outside of county and state buildings.

The state AFL-CIO, with about 2.5 million members, is the state's largest labor organization.

Polls since late last year have shown Gore locked in a too-close-to-call contest with former New Jersey Sen. Bill Bradley for New York's Democratic presidential nomination.
