ORNISH, N.H. - As Congress investigates WGBH and other public television stations for sharing donor lists with political parties, Vice President Al Gore warned yesterday that Republicans should not use the controversy to try to kill public TV.

In an interview with WMUR-TV, Gore condemned the list-sharing practice as ''bad judgment,'' and said, ''they shouldn't have done it.''

But he said Republicans should not try to cut funding or eliminate public television as a result.

''The American people support public broadcasting,'' Gore said. ''It's really a bright spot on the television dial, especially for children as a source of educational programming.''

Gore said it is the ''ideological extreme'' who are trying to seize an opportunity to end public broadcasting.
