ASHINGTON - Most Americans are relatively content with the prospect of having to choose next year between Republican George W. Bush and Democrat Al Gore for president of the United States, a poll released Thursday found.

Conversely, there is little interest in seeing someone such as Texas billionaire Ross Perot or Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura mount a third-party presidential bid, according to the survey by The Pew Research Center for The People & The Press.

In June 1992, a Pew poll found that 61 percent were ''not satisfied'' with the leading candidates then, the Republican incumbent George Bush and the Democratic challenger Bill Clinton. However, in the latest poll, 53 percent said they are ''very satisfied'' or ''fairly satisfied'' with a possible Bush-Gore White House matchup in 2000.

The dissatisfaction in 1992 helped propel Perot into a independent drive for the White House.

At one point, polls showed Perot leading in a three-way contest. Perot ended up with about 19 percent of the vote as Clinton unseated Bush.
