WHAT TO LOOK FOR: The Czechs and Slovaks, whose history is all about rough water, are always upright and on top. The Americans are usually good for one medal in whitewater - Shipley gets it this time.

WOMEN

WHEN: Sept. 17 (kayak singles slalom), Sept. 29 (kayak fours 500 sprint), Sept. 30 (kayak singles 500 sprint, kayak doubles 500 sprint)

US ENTRIES: Kathy Colin, Rebecca Giddens, Tamara Jenkins.

FAVORITES:

  • Kayak singles slalom: 1. Stepanka Hilgertova, Czech Rep.; 2. Beata Grzesik, Poland; 3. Sandra Friedli, Switzerland
  • Kayak singles 500: 1. Caroline Brunet, Canada; 2. Josefa Idem, Italy; 3. Rita Koban, Hungary
  • Kayak pairs 500: 1. Poland; 2. Canada; 3. Hungary
  • Kayak fours 500: 1. Hungary; 2. Germany; 3. Poland.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR: The medal days are long past for the Americans, who didn't make a final at home in flatwater four years ago and are dead in the water now. The Germans and eastern Europeans have always given the rest of the world a paddling. That won't change Down Under.
