WOMEN
Zimmerman's stab at US medal

Compiled by Globe Staff, 09/15/2000

WHEN: Sept. 17 (individual epee), Sept. 19 (team epee), Sept. 21 (individual foil), Sept. 23 (team foil).

US ENTRIES: Ann Marsh, Arlene Stevens, Felicia Zimmerman, Iris Zimmerman.

FAVORITES:

  • Epee: 1. Laura Flessel-Colovic, France; 2. Miraida Garcia-Soto, Cuba; 3. Diana Romagnoli, Switzerland
  • Team epee: 1. Hungary; 2. France; 3. Germany
  • Foil: 1. Valentina Vezzali, Italy; 2. Sabine Bau, Germany; 3. Svetlana Bojko, Russia
  • Team foil: 1. Italy; 2. Germany; 3. Romania.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR: No American woman has won an Olympic medal but Iris Zimmerman, who ended the world drought with a shared bronze in foil last year, could be the one. The golds, though, stay in Europe.

MEN

WHEN: Sept. 16 (individual epee), Sept. 18 (team epee), Sept. 20 (individual foil), Sept. 21 (individual sabre), Sept. 22 (team foil), Sept. 24 (team sabre).

US ENTRIES: Clifford Bayer, Tamir Bloom, Keeth Smart, Akhnaten Spencer-El.

FAVORITES:

  • Epee: 1. Arnd Schmitt, Germany; 2. Peter Vanky, Sweden; 3. Pavel Kolobkov, Russia
  • Team epee: 1. France; 2. Germany; 3. Cuba
  • Foil: 1. Sergei Golubitsky, Ukraine; 2. Kim Young-ho, South Korea; 3. Matteo Zennaro, Italy
  • Team foil: 1. France; 2. Poland; 3. China
  • Saber: 1. Stanislav Pozdnyakov, Russia; 2. Damien Touya, France; 3. Luigi Tarantino, Italy;
  • Team saber: 1. France; 2. Russia; 3. Hungary.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR: Italy and Russia split the golds four years ago, but the French could sweep the three team titles now. No chance for the Americans, who haven't won an Olympic medal at a non-boycotted Games in 40 years.
