Dennis Eckersley serves as a Red Sox Studio Analyst before and after select Boston Red Sox games on NESN. Eckersley joins Bob Rodgers on The Boston Globe Pre-Game Report, NESN's half-hour pre-game show, to deliver pre-game analysis and commentary. After the game Eckersley returns for extra analysis on the network's popular Red Sox post-game show W.B. Mason Extra Innings.
Eckersley pitched 24 seasons in the major leagues with five teams (Indians, Red Sox, Cubs, A's, Cardinals), including two different stints with the Red Sox (1978-1984, 1998). He spent the first 12 years of his career as a starting pitcher then switched to the bullpen to become one of the most dominant closers in the game. During a 5 year stretch beginning in 1988, Eckersley averaged 44 saves, a 1.88 ERA, over a strikeout/inning and less than one walk/9 innings. In 1992, Eckersley became only the second relief pitcher to win both the A.L. MVP and Cy Young Award in the same season. He is third on the MLB all-time career save list with 390.
The six time All-Star has served as a color analyst for the Oakland A's television broadcasts (1999) and has filled in for Jerry Remy during Red Sox broadcasts.
