In Dodger shortstop Maury Wills' record-breaking year on the bases (104 steals), it was fitting that his running made the difference in Game 1, played in Washington's new stadium. Entering the game as a pinch-runner in the sixth, he stole a base and scored the Nationals' first run in a 3-1 victory. In the eighth, Wills singled, took third on a single to left and tagged up to score the third run on a short, foul fly to right. He earned the first-ever MVP award for the game. The AL scored on two singles and a sacrifice fly by Roger Maris in the sixth. President John F. Kennedy threw out the game's first ball.
