Four days before the game, Steve Garvey of the Dodgers, who had been voted to the game as a write-in candidate, came down with the mumps. Doctors cleared him to play, but he expected to make only a token appearance. Instead, he played nine innings, had a single and a double, drove in a run, scored once and sparkled in the field as the Nationals won 7-2.
