The Cubs' Bill Madlock, on the way to his first batting championship, hit a bases-loaded single in the ninth to break a 3-3 tie, and the Nationals won 6-3. Earlier NL runs included back-to-back homers by Steve Garvey and Jim Wynn in the second inning. All the American League runs came in the sixth on a three-run blast by Carl Yastrzemski of the Red Sox off Tom Seaver.
