Candidates ruminate on a time capsule
Items the Republican presidential candidates would put in a time capsule to represent the 21st century, as asked during yesterday's debate in Michigan:
GARY BAUER: The first item that always ought to be put in a time capsule, whatever the century, is the Declaration of Independence, because of the words: ''We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal, endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights, among these the right to liberty and the pursuit of happiness.''
JOHN MCCAIN: Along with those, perhaps Einstein's Theory of Relativity, perhaps.
GEORGE W. BUSH: How about Martin Luther King's speech, to show the heart of America; and the microchip, to show the entrepreneurial spirit of the country?
STEVE FORBES: In addition to the Declaration and the Constitution, I'd have a grain of sand, because that's the basis of silicon - the whole information age.
ALAN KEYES: I think the Declaration and the Constitution are good. But maybe we could summarize the point of all of them by remembering what they make possible, and just throw in a couple of ballots to represent what makes this system work.
ORRIN HATCH: I'd put the Constitution in there and the Declaration of Independence and a picture of the diverse families in America to show that we're a country of a wide diversity of people and we're the greatest country in the world and it's going to be even greater in this century.
