In recent years, automated teller machines (ATMs) have grown beyond their humble roots as cash dispensers, and have begun to supplant checkbooks as the convenience of electronically transferring money has spread to retail stores, gas stations, supermarkets, and other outlets.

You can already use ATMs to buy stamps in Boston and ski passes in Tahoe. But banks and ATM manufacturers have grander plans for the future. Pilot programs are combining security and recognition technology with software expansion that will bring the services of the World Wide Web to an ATM near you.
