Finishing the Big Dig / Photo gallery
Finishing the Big Dig On Dec. 17, 1999, ironworkers Jamill Jean Pierre, left, and Joe Haugh hoist into place one of the 116 cables that support the bridge deck. The longest and thickest of the cables is 500 feet long, from the top of the south tower to the southernmost point of the bridge. The cables are made of dozens of smaller cables and set into a central beam called a "spline."
