Finishing the Big Dig Another environmentally conscious element of the Zakim's design are the 70 diamond- and hexagonal-shaped holes cut in the bridge's deck to allow light to reach the river below. Environmentalists feared that without the holes, the bridge's long shadow would have caused spawning alewife to lose their way in the water.
