Playing before his home fans in Boston, Ted Williams stole the show. He had two homers, two singles and a walk, scoring four runs and driving in a record five. The latter homer is remembered because it was hit off Rip Sewell's "eephus," the Pirate right-hander's blooper pitch. Three AL pitchers limited the Nationals to three hits in the 12-0 win.
