1959: NL 5, AL 4
In an effort to increase income for their pension fund, the players won the owners' approval for two All-Star Games beginning in 1959. The NL won the first game 5-4, scoring four runs in the last two innings. The winning run scored on Willie Mays' triple to center in the bottom of the eighth off the Yankees' Whitey Ford. The Tigers' Al Kaline homered for the AL; the Braves' Eddie Matthews for the NL. Starter Don Drysdale of the Dodgers was the NL's pitching hero, holding the Americans hitless for the first three innings, fanning four.
