1984:
NL 3, AL 1
The pitchers took over, striking out a combined 21 batters (11 by the NL, 10 by the AL) for a nine-inning record. Three times pitchers struck out the side in order, a feat accomplished only four times in all the other All-Star games. In the fourth, LA's Fernando Valenzuela fanned AL sluggers Dave Winfield, Reggie Jackson and George Brett. An inning later Mets rookie Dwight Gooden, who at 19 was the youngest All-Star ever, struck out Lance Parrish, Chet Lemon and Alvin Davis. The six consecutive strike outs by NL pitchers was a record. The AL's Bill Caudill fanned Tim Raines, Ryne Sandberg and Keith Hernandez in order in the seventh. The NL won the game 3-1 on homers by Gary Carter of the Expos and Dale Murphy of the Braves.
