NL pitching proved dominant again. The AL scored in the bottom of the first, but got only four hits the rest of the way and lost 6-1 in Minneapolis. The winning run came in the third when Tom Herr doubled and scored on Steve Garvey's single. NL starter LaMarr Hoyt of the San Diego Padres gave up one unearned run in three innings and was named the game's MVP.
