Free clinic to treat Marathon injuries

By Marvin Pave, Globe Staff, 4/6/2003

Boston Marathon runners who feel excessively fatigued, or whose feet are swollen or cut one or two days after the race, can take advantage of a free marathon runners' injury clinic offered by Newton-Wellesley Hospital from 4 to 7:30 p.m. April 22 and 23.

"Because many nonacute injuries and illnesses first become evident 24 to 72 hours after the event, it is imperative that the runners have the opportunity to be evaluated and treated promptly to prevent certain conditions from becoming more serious," said Jim Zachazewski, the hospital's director of rehabilitation services."

He said individuals should consider coming to the clinic if they have any pain or swelling or are suffering from blisters, cuts, abrasions, or lacerations on their feet or from a fall while running. Also, a runner who feels ill or is unusually tired could be suffering from dehydration.

The clinic is cosponsored by the Boston Athletic Association, which will oversee the 107th Boston Marathon on April 21. The clinic will be held at the Wikstrom Surgical Center at 2014 Washington St., Newton. Runners can walk in or call 617-243-6383 for an appointment.
