Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929 -1968) is considered by many to be the father of the modern civil rights movement. King's "Great Dream" of brotherhood between all races stirred the nation's conscience and united African-Americans together in their struggle for civil rights. His powerful words rallied African-Americans nationwide to stand up against the discrimination between black and white in eating places, shops, schools, public parks, and playgrounds. His philosophy of nonviolent direct action, and his strategies for rational and non-destructive social change, galvanized the conscience of this nation and reordered its priorities.
