Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15, 1929, the second of three children. His father was a Baptist minister. He attended segregated public schools in Georgia, graduating from high school at the age of fifteen. In 1948, King received a bachelor's degree in sociology from Morehouse College in Atlanta. After three years of theological study at Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester, Pennsylvania—where King was elected president of a predominantly white senior class—he received his Bachelor of Divinity degree. With a fellowship won at Crozer, King enrolled in doctoral studies in Systematic Theology at Boston University and was awarded his Ph.D. in 1955. While attending Boston University, he met Coretta Scott whom he married in June 1953.
