Roba, Chebet back to defend titles
Defending champions Fatuma Roba of Ethiopia and Joseph Chebet of Kenya will return to defend their titles in Boston Marathon 2000, leading a list of 34 elite athletes announced by sponsor John Hancock. Roba will be attempting what no other runner has been able to do: win Boston four consecutive times.

This year's field second biggest ever
Nearly twice the number of runners as usual will teem from Hopkinton to Boston for the millennium's first Boston Marathon on April 17th. Race organizers at the Boston Athletic Association expect 18,000 official participants, the largest field since the 100th running in 1996.
