Changing Faces of Boston
Look for yourself, your family, and friends in these panels painted by young artists in a city-sponsored art program.
Fri. 1 p.m.-12:30 a.m.; Sat. 1 p.m.-12 a.m.; Sun. 1-7 p.m. Fountain (near Park Street T station).

The Fantastic Future
Music, lights, and laser show; animated countdown.
Runs every half hour Fri. 5 p.m.-12:30 a.m. Sat. 5 p.m.-12 a.m. Parade ground (On Beacon Street side from Charles to Park).

Kids' Countdown
Setting its clocks to Greenwich Mean Time, Boston 2000 celebrates with a family fireworks show. Festivities from around the world will be shown on a Jumbotron video screen. Mayor Thomas M. Menino and area children will light a 6-foot sterling silver lantern; the beacon of freedom is modeled after one designed by Paul Revere.
Fri. 7 p.m. (lantern lighting at 6:30 p.m.) Ballfield.

Living Room
Outdoor sculpture exhibit creates a bridge between the living space within our home and the outdoor space that surrounds us. The ParkArts program celebrates the art, history, and culture of a dozen Boston communities. This exhibit will remain on the Common through Jan. 29.

Lumieres
Giant glowing sculptures of hands, celestial bodies, and ancient symbols. Created by William Turville.
Fri. 1 p.m.-12:30 a.m.; Sat. 1 p.m.-midnight; Sun. 1-7 p.m. Railroad mall (the paths that crisscross the Common near Boylston and Charles streets).

Millennium's Bridge
Murray Dewart's bridge symbolizes hope and peace. Constructed by Tim Johnson and Christopher Dewart, it is decorated with changing lights and poetry from Boston's diverse communities. At each end of the bridge, you may ring 8-foot copper peace bells.

Other Worlds
Ice sculptures of the wonders of the universe, created by Don Chapelle of Brew Moon Restaurants.

The Revolutionary Snake Ensemble
Multimedia spectacle by a band that creates its own urban tribal music by blending New Orleans brass with African and Latin rhythms. It's half brass band, half circus, and the dancing is nonstop. (

Stargate 2000 Steve Rose/Ice Effects
The mammoth, 22-ton ice gate stretches across the ground as Father Time's chariot races through it. Created by Steve Rose's Ice Effects.

Boston Pops
Boston Pops is presented live from Symphony Hall on two Jumbotron video screens.

First Light 2000
Steve Rose and Ice Effects have hand-sculpted 200 ice candles commissioned by corporations, community groups, and individuals in support of First Night. Each candle represents one decade of the last 2,000 years.

Jumbotron Family & Arts Programming
The best of Boston's animation, film, video, performance, and visual arts are shown on two Jumbotron screens. Clips cycle throughout the weekend.

Midnight Finale
Jumbotron screens show the Boston Pops concert at Symphony Hall as Keith Lockhart and the mayor lead revelers in a countdown to 2000, then the fireworks over Boston Harbor. Pyrotechnic effects will light up the plaza as well.

Millennium Waltz
Romance sculpted in ice as Steve Rose and Ice Effects usher in the new millennium with one last dance.

Opening/Closing Ceremonies
Mayor Thomas M. Menino kicks off the celebration with the illumination of 200 electric candles carved from ice. Next, the Janice Allen Freedom Choir presents a gospel music salute, "2000 Voices." (
Artist profile). Tim McHale and Nick Page then lead the public in Boston's "Millennium Song," composed by McHale. Sunday, the Freedom Choir returns and Page and McHale lead a sing-along of the greatest hits of the millennium; a fireworks finale will be held on the harbor at 7 p.m.

A Peaceful Kingdom

LightMotif 2000

On First Night weekend, the city will be awash with vivid colors and lights. Large-scale projections, video and robotic lighting, and lasers will illuminate the buildings and streets of downtown.

John Powell's projections of poetry in various languages and alphabets. Dazzling images change, fade, and reappear.

BPL: Dartmouth Street
"Shrine to Ritualized Time," created by Karen Aqua and Jane Gillooly, explores ritual and archetypal symbols, using large-screen animation and video projection with music by Ken Field and Ken Winokur. (

First Church of Christ, Scientist: Plaza
For the first time, all the buildings will be specially illuminated. The public will be surveyed on their reaction. Created by Samina Quraeshi Associates, Ann Beha Architects, and Ripman Lighting.

Hynes: Hallway of Exhibit Hall C
Douglas Kornfeld uses large-scale projections of universal icons for men and women to challenge preconceptions of our world. The shadows of exhibit visitors will be part of the show.

Institute of Contemporary Art
"An Unusually Bad Lot," a new work by Shimon Attie, projects lasers and slides onto the side of the building to depict its previous life as the Division 16 police station between 1888 and 1965.
