Among the best places to sniff out free events are the dozens of colleges in the Boston area. Call the main number or log onto the web site of any college, and be prepared to get blown away. Lectures, films, movies, music ... chances are they're happening somewhere tonight.

One of our favorite college activities is stargazing. Boston University and Wheaton College offer free stargazing on Wednesday and Friday nights respectively.

Boston is also blessed with several top-notch music schools, which means an incredibly diverse selection of free music. Finding a concert at the Berklee College of Music is easier than finding an ant at a picnic. This week alone you can hear everything from jazz and fusion to country and western. Call the school's concert line or check www.berklee.edu for show times and locations.

Both the Longy School of Music in Cambridge and the New England Conservatory of Music offer free classical concerts most nights of the week. The Community Music Center of Boston offers free concerts each month. Check the classical music listings in Calendar under the college category - you'll find free concerts at music schools throughout the area.
