Summer stuff

Maps & directions

- Arnold Arboretum
- Cranberry World
- Hatch Shell

As summer approaches, the opportunities for free entertainment in Boston multiplies. The radio-station sponsored concert season officially kicks off in a big way on April 24 with the sixth annual WBOS EarthFest on the Hatch Shell. This year's concert features Bruce Hornsby, Melissa Ferrick, Susan Tedeschi, Duncan Sheik, the Spin Doctors, and Nakota Sioux. The show starts at 11 a.m., but if you're interested in sitting on the grass, plan to arrive at least an hour earlier. A word of warning: The grass on the Esplanade is still a bit soggy this time of year. Bring a lawn chair or something plastic to sit on.

Harvesting season is still a few months away, but Ocean Spray's Cranberry World (225 Water St., Plymouth, 508-747-2350) officially opens for the season on May 1. Most of Cranberry World is devoted to the history of cranberry harvesting, but a small bog on the property will give you an idea of what growing the berries is all about. Free cranberry juice and desserts at the end of the tour.

The Arnold Arboretum (125 Arborway, Jamaica Plain, 617-524-1718) is always worth a visit, but mark May 16 specifically as a day to stroll the 265-acre tree museum. Once a year, the Arboretum opens its gates for picnicking to coincide with the blossoming of the park's more than 800 lilacs (head for Bussey Hill Road for the best scents).
