While many of Boston's biggest art museums have free afternoons, there usually isn't any need to wait if you have a craving to see art. Take a walk along Newbury Street any afternoon and poke around the dozens of galleries that line the street. Among some of the more interesting are Robert Klein Gallery (top name photography), Childs Gallery (paintings, prints, and sculpture, often from estate sales), Alpha Gallery (contemporary art). The Arden Gallery, Gallery Naga, and the Howard Yezerski Gallery sell contemporary art with a focus on Boston artists. The Vose Galleries sells pricey but beautiful 19th and early 20th century art.

There's even an opportunity to rub elbows with a famous artist this week. Peter Max will be at the Dyansen Gallery at receptions April 17-18 at 1 p.m. for a show of his paintings; registration is required.
