Live music and dancing are often free around town. Many clubs don't charge a cover on weeknights, and the Toad in Cambridge never charges one. Calling the space tiny is being kind, but given the price and the quality of the music, we're not complaining.

Many up-and-coming bands play at small local bars and restaurants with no cover charge or drink minimum. Places such as Brew Moon in Cambridge, Northeast Brewing Company in Brighton, and the Playhouse Lounge in the Charles Playhouse host bands most nights of the week.

Seeking more sedate entertainment? Restaurant piano bars are usually a safe bet. The Good Life in the financial district regularly hosts live jazz. In the Theater District, the Encore Club at the Tremont House Hotel has free cabaret and American standards nightly. One of our favorite spots for a night of wining, dining, and dancing is Cafe Italia in the North End on Thursday through Saturday nights. Put on a crisp shirt and skip Joey and Maria's Comedy Wedding - this is the real thing.
