MASS. DELEGATION
New enthusiasm in state's delegates
Energized by a week of party-building in the California sun, Massachusetts delegates headed home Friday to try to repeat the Democrats' electoral successes in Massachusetts. "I don't envision this being a Herculean task," said Edward Collins Jr., a delegate from Springfield.

SCENE ON THE FLOOR
Excited delegates buck their orders
The call came into the Louisiana delegation at 6:50 p.m. The Boiler Room was not amused. Somehow, the Democratic Leadership Committee had gotten hundreds of ''GO JOE! DLC'' signs into the convention hall, and the delegates were happily waving the unsanctioned placards about.

Speakers try to sell candidate as man's man
In words and pictures, the man who last night accepted the Democratic Party's presidential nomination was presented through a tableaux of family and friends as a man of character and caring, good works and good fun, anything but the wonk that voters can't warm up to.

PROTESTS
Dissenters run out of apparent targets
The convention ended with a literal bang yesterday: drums beaten in protest and support of every issue imaginable. But now -- after the WTO in Seattle, after the IMF in Washington, after the RNC in Philadelphia, and the DNC in Los Angeles -- the protest movement finds itself without an acronym to attack.
