MODERATOR: Jim Lehrer of PBS.
COVERAGE: CNN, PBS, ABC, CBS, Fox News Channel, MSNBC.
FORMAT: Traditional, lectern-style arrangement. No opening statements. Question by moderator to one candidate, who will have 2 minutes. The other candidate will then have 1 minute rebuttal time. Moderator may extend discussion of any subject or move to a new question. There will be 2 minute closing statements by each candidate. There will be no commercials or other breaks.

Vice President Al Gore and Texas Gov. George W. Bush clashed over tax cuts, prescription drug assistance under Medicare and abortion Tuesday night in their first campaign debate of the fall.

Until last night, Vice President Al Gore was still a White House understudy. Until last night, Governor George W. Bush was still a relative newcomer to the political arts. But the two men are now battle-tested survivors of the most unforgiving forum in American politics.

Thousands of protesters waved placards along the road leading to the University of Massachusetts' Boston campus this evening as journalists from all over the world gathered to cover the first Bush-Gore presidential debate.

Libertarians fail to stop debate in court
The state's Libertarian Party lost an 11th-hour legal effort to force organizers of the first presidential debate to include their candidate in Tuesday night's event. A Superior Court judge said the Libertarians waited too long to fiel their suit.
